The Philippines was a colony of Spain for over 300 years. The Philippines did not gain independence immediately after the declaration of June 12, 1898. Consequently, the Philippine Declaration of Independence was commemorated as an event of the past, although it was not a past event in the minds of the Filipinos. It was not until July 4, 1946, that the Philippines truly gained independence.
